William Thomas (Tommy) Nelson Jr. was the eldest child born to William Thomas Nelson Sr. and Mittie Lena (Green) Nelson on December 13, 1943 in Belton, TX. Tommy spent most of his childhood in Huntsville, TX before moving to Austin where he graduated from McCallum High School in 1962. He attended the University of Texas for a brief time. He later began his career with the Texas Highway Department. He married his first wife, Patsy Williams in 1964 and they had two children together, a son, Tracy (1968) and a daughter, Tammy (1970). During their childhood, Tommy was involved extensively in their activities. He was a boy scout leader, helped establish and build the North Austin Youth Association field and served as president of the North Austin Lions Club. After his retirement of over 30 years of service with the Texas Highway Department, he moved to Paige, TX and married his second wife, Yvonne in 2002. He didn’t stay retired too long and took up a second career working in the insurance industry. Tommy divided his time volunteering for the Bastrop County Victim Services, Crime Stoppers and was a member of Go Texan. Some of Tommy’s favorite things were spending time outdoors, reading westerns, working on various projects around the house, watching old war movies and telling corny jokes. Most weekends he could be found behind the grill, cooking for friends and family. Recently, Tommy became a member of the Heart of Texas Church of Christ in Bastrop. Tommy went to be with his Savior on April 10th, 2023, he was 79 years old. He was preceded in death by both of his parents, Thomas and Mittie Nelson. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Yvonne Miley Nelson; brother John Delane Nelson and wife Elle; sister Janice Leigh Cantu; son William Tracy Nelson and wife Toni; daughter Tamara Dawn Smith and husband Troy. Stepchildren, Russell Townley and wife Lacy; Karen Wuensche; Keith Easterly and wife Andee; and Rhonda Easterly. Grandchildren William Tanner Nelson and Brody King Smith; great grandchildren Tailyn, Indryx and Parker Nelson; and numerous step grandchildren. Memorial Service will be held on Monday, April 17, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. at Heart of Texas Church of Christ in Bastrop.
