Rev. Steven Lewis Newman

April 29, 1947 — July 9, 2021

Reverend Steven Lewis Newman, 74, of Bastrop, TX, beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and friend went home to be with the Lord, Friday, July 9 th , 2021.

He was born April 29, 1947, in New Martinsville, WV, a son of the late Lewis and Deloris Edna Hawkins Newman. He was a graduate of West Virginia University and earned his Master of Divinity at Lexington Theological Seminary. He was a retired minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), serving churches in Kentucky, West Virginia, Texas, and Indiana. He served as a Captain in the 18 th Airborne Corps during the Vietnam War. He was a long-standing member of The American Legion.

Reverend Newman was very active in a wide variety of organizations. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity; The Rotary Club in which he was a Paul Harris Fellow; a life member of the Disciples of Christ Historical Society and the Council on Christian Unity; and the Sons of the American Revolution. He was also involved in two mission trips to Latin America.

While pastor of the Danville Christian Church, he helped raise awareness of violence against women through the Sheltering Wings organization; served on a committee at Danville High School to plan for school development and growth; served as a guest speaker at Danville High School after 9-11 to help students cope with the disaster; raised the third largest amount of money in Indianapolis for the CROP walk (fundraiser for hunger); and volunteered as chaplain for both the Danville Fire Department and Police Department for eight years.

And, finally, in a stunning personal achievement, Reverend Newman won first place in Beasley’s Orchards’ 20 th Anniversary Great Apple Pie Bake Off!

During his retirement, he traveled with his beloved CJ, was on the Board of Directors of the friends of Ernie Pyle (the voice of the American solider in WW II) and explored his family genealogy dating back to the Mayflower and beyond.

Survivors include his beloved wife and dearest friend, Carol Jean; four children, Matthew Chambers, Kathleen Kessell Chambers, Mary Elizabeth Pellegrino, and Jeremy Newman; a very special daughter-in-law Dr. Mary Bryan Hobbs; a very special son-in-law Glenn Pellegrino; a very special daughter-in-law Sherri Newman;  two dear sisters, Lynn Newman Barcus and Jan Lea Newman O’Donnell; two loved brother-in-laws, Butch Barcus and Kelly O’Donnell;  five cherished nieces and nephews, Trey Barcus, Jill Barcus Hall, Todd Barcus, Leanne Grace, and Linnea Joy O’Donnell, and six adored grandchildren, Kai Leigh Hascher, Carter, Brooks and Hobbs Chambers, and Ava and Ela Pellegrino.

Visitation will be 3P-6P, Thursday, July 22, 2021, at Bastrop Providence Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held at a future date to be announced.
