Sherry Elaine Schena

June 5, 1957 — September 30, 2021

The first born child of Melvin and Janet (Janicek) Roeder, Sherry Elaine (Roeder) Schena graced our world in La Grange Texas on June 5, 1957. Weighing barely 5 pounds at birth, this feisty little redhead honed her leadership skills and her nicknames in Shiner Texas, ultimately embracing the role of ‘big sister’ to Gwen and Mark and graduating from St. Paul High School.

In 1975, she tossed her trademark long red hair in the wind and headed to Austin Texas where she continued her education and ultimately built a successful business in Bastrop real estate with George Reinemund and worked with countless others in the industry. She earned honors and many accolades befitting her entrepreneurial spirit, dedication to the industry and community.

Sherry’s role as Mother to Thomas Watson or her “Sunshine” as she called him and Outstanding Wife of 38 years to Angelo Schena always took precedence – although one might argue that her love for her labrador “puppies” that shared their home often challenged their pecking order.

Sherry was intensely proud and protective of her family especially her grandchildren, Kirsten, Kaelan and Ava. Her nieces, nephews and the plethora of friends and extended family that surrounded her in life all profoundly grieve her death today, every day and will for life.

Sherry’s conversations were rarely if ever about herself. She made everyone feel like they were part of THE circle. When with Sherry her happy and jovial aura was contagious.

Through a selfless lens Sherry shared her work and life experiences with many by serving on numerous boards and commissions throughout the community including the Texas Board of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors. She was essential in the creation of the Bastrop County Board of Realtors. In her 34 years she served every position, some numerous times. In addition she founded the Scholarship Foundation for the Bastrop County Board of Realtors. She loved to give back. Making sure people had food on the table, the Bastrop County food pantry was one area she always gave. Her love for her family and grandchildren also spurred a giving heart to CASA of Bastrop County. You could frequently find her at the live and silent auctions supporting the 4-H and FFA programs in the Bastrop area. She was known to bid against her own family and when busted for doing so it was, (in her words with that smirky smile) “for a good cause”.

For several decades you could find her either bowling, playing softball, coaching or umpiring after a full days work. She also volunteered for several years at Bastrop Relay for Life and Bastrop Homecoming.

Everybody has a “life with Sherry“ story. The common denominator to all the stories told and memories shared is simply that Sherry genuinely cared. She somehow always found time to visit with, make that phone call, send that text message, email or mail that card. She was a special soul with a fire cracker spirit that will be immensely missed.

At age 64, during the predawn hours on October 1, 2021, Angelos Little Darlin’ left her earthly body. Little darlin’, The Big Boss, Head Hancho, Mama, Grammy, friend, Big Red, Red Ryder, Aunt Sherry, Sis, The Queen....are just a few of the titles she proudly wore not to mention excelled at.

Everyone that knew her was touched by her presence. What a legacy, what a life! We are all forever changed as a result of loosing her however we were all changed the moment we met her and will forever be because we had the honor and privilege of knowing her.

May she Rest In Peace and know what a difference she made in this world. As life moves forward we invite each of you to keep her legacy alive in your heart by sharing your “Sherry” stories and living your life as vivaciously as she did.

In addition to flowers donations can also be made to the charity of your choice in her honor.

Her favorite local charities were CASA of Bastrop, The Bastrop Food Pantry and The Bastrop Family Crisis Center.
