Samuel Dwight Stanifer, born December 3, 1942 in Morganfield, Kentucky, passed away on Friday, August 10, 2018 in Austin, Texas. The only child of Rom & Tressie Stanifer, he was raised in Altus, Oklahoma.He leaves his beloved wife, Melissa (Holmes) Stanifer, his children, Barbara, Kendra & Nicolas, one grandson and many dear friends & adopted family.Sam graduated from Northeastern Oklahoma State University with a B.S. in Physics before entering the U.S. Navy where he carried out missions in Vietnam as an Electronics Engineer & Flight Navigator on the A6 aircraft. After being released from Active Duty, he transferred to the U.S. Naval Reserve & began his career as a Civil Servant for the U.S. Navy. Sam retired from both, finishing his Civil Service career as a Division Head & his Naval career as a Commander with numerous commendations.Sam was interested in Amateur Radio, earthquake research, flying, skiing, camping, hiking, health, gardening & learning about all manner of subjects.Services: He will be buried with military honors at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas on Friday, August 17, 2018 at 9:45am.In lieu of flowers, Sam would have liked donations sent to Feed the Need Missions at https://feedtheneed.org.
