Raul (Roy) M. Vasquez age 77 died on Saturday November 11, 2017 in Bastrop Texas after a 12 year battle with renal cell carcinoma. Born in San Antonio Texas August 20, 1940, he joined the US Navy after graduating High School in 1958. Stationed in San Diego and after boot camp and school he was assigned to the USS Mathews as the specialist in charge of the disbursing office. Honorably discharged in Nov 1963, he came back to Texas and worked in Austin, Texas until his decision to re-enlisted in February of1965. He volunteered and traveled in the USS Cabildo and served two consecutive tours in Danang Vietnam from 1965-1967. His second discharge was in Dec of 1968. He also served on the USS Oklahoma City (CLG-5) and USS Mispillion (AO-105) In his travels he fell in love with the Pacific Northwest and on discharge he moved to, went to school, and worked for the city of Seattle Washington then Cook County Wash. for 40 years as a bookeeper in practical accounting. Always, his favorite pastime was drawing, reading and playing chess. He was a quiet, conservative man that made friends easy everywhere he went. His retirement in Bastrop Texas was unexpected but was filled with family and friendships that lasted until his last days. Oldest of four siblings - Abel Vadquez, Adalberto Vasquez and Minerva Sandoval. He has one daughter, Liza Marie Cheek and four grandchildren, Rachel,Susan, Simon and Sasha Cheek. He was preceded in death by his parents Abel and Manuela Vasquez and his younger brother Adalbert. The family wishes to thank everyone that made Roy's last seven years a full and bountiful time. From the chess group he started at the Coffee Dog, Maxines and Jalisco's where he often ate, to the Bastrop Senior Center where he made very special friends. He always had a wonderful time being with all of you. He takes the love with him. Checkmate... Visitation will be 4:00-7:00pm Wednesday, November 15, 2017. Funeral Services will be held 2:00pm Thursday, November 16, 2017, Bastrop Providence Funeral Home. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
