Roy Taylor Mast

January 16, 1951 — May 15, 2022

On Sunday, May 15, 2022, Roy Taylor Mast, loving husband and devoted father, passed away suddenly of cardiac arrest at age 71.  Roy is survived by his loving wife Maribel, his children and their spouses, Jennie and Gavin Palfreyman, Greg and Sarah Mast, Laura and Antonio Carmona.  He also leaves behind his sister Christine Gilbert, and his grandchildren Corwyn Palfreyman, Peter and Benjamin Mast, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their children. He is preceded in death by his parents Joni Catherine Bundy Mast and Dr. Clarence Simpson Mast Jr, his brother Larry Bundy Mast, and his sister Sue Mast Barker.

Roy was born January 16, 1951, in Midland, Texas and graduated from Midland High School. He graduated from The University of Texas in 1973 with a BS in Electrical Engineering. Roy started his Biomedical Engineering career at Scott & White in Temple, Texas before heading to the University of Virginia and earning his MS in Biomedical Engineering in 1979. Throughout his 43-year career he worked in a range of areas from genomics to artificial organs and implantable medical devices and was awarded several patents.

Roy and Mary Isabel Folk (Maribel) were married August 31, 1974, in Houston, Texas. The young family grew as they moved between Littleton, CO and later to Lake Jackson, TX. Throughout the early 2000’s, Roy and Maribel lived in several places, including Chandler, AZ, Clarence, NY, and Ann Arbor, MI, before finally retiring in Bastrop, TX in 2016.

An avid, lifelong Scouter, Roy made a difference in the lives of countless youth. As an Eagle Scout, Roy was always prepared to serve, which he did in nearly every conceivable capacity including as a Den Leader, Sea Scout Skipper, Scoutmaster, Committee Chairman, Sea Scout Commodore, and as both a Unit and District Commissioner.  His recognitions include Arrow of Light, Youth Religious Award, Eagle Scout, Vigil OA, Adult Religious Recognition, Woodbadge, Seabadge, SEAL Trainer, Commissioner’s Arrowhead, the William. H. Spurgeon Award, Silver Beaver, and Distinguished Commissioner. He was thrilled to serve on staff at the World Scout Jamboree in 2019 and enjoyed sharing his scouting stories with his grandsons. Roy truly lived out the promise to “help other people at all times.”

Upon retiring, Roy was able to focus on his hobbies and use his meticulous planning and manufacturing abilities. He began “Roy’s Robot Repair” of Bastrop, building laser cutters, 3-D printers, and robotic cars in his garage. His generous spirit and creativity resulted in a steady stream of original pieces of wooden laser-cut art as gifts for his friends and family. He was able to share his expertise in fabrication and manufacturing by working with the Smithville HS shop program, and most recently built a new bell wheel for the Calvary Episcopal Church in Bastrop.

Roy loved the outdoors, was an enthusiastic sailor and swimmer, an avid sportsman and shooting instructor, loved taking pictures of wildlife, and enjoyed working in his home gardens.

A devout Christian and active in the Church, Roy served on the Calvary Episcopal School Board, in the Brotherhood of Saint Andrew, and live streaming services. He had also served as a Deacon in the Presbyterian Church, and was active at both Clarence Presbyterian Church, Clarence, NY, and First Presbyterian, Ann Arbor, MI.

He was known for his energy and work ethic, willingness to help anyone in need, his wide-ranging expertise, and meticulous attention to detail. Roy treasured his friends, loved his family with all his heart, and absolutely adored his grandsons. His family will miss him greatly and cherish his memory.
