Michael Eugene Haley

September 22, 1946 — November 4, 2020

During a spectacular Austin, Texas sunset on November 4, 2020, surrounded by his loving wife and 2 daughters, Michael Eugene Haley ‘graduated with honors’ from this world into the loving presence of His Lord and Savior. He was 74 years old.

Michael (Mike) was born in Houston, Texas on September 22, 1946 to Dr. Jack A. and Nora Haley. He attended Memorial High School in Houston and earned degrees in Math and Biology from Houston Baptist University. Mike was a member of the Sigma Phi Chi fraternity (Alpha Tau Omega). The deep bond of friendship between him and a number of his fraternity brothers has endured, even now, over 50 years later. This past August 21st, Mike and his wife, Jane Yates Haley celebrated the Golden Anniversary of their 50-year marriage. Mike was a Product Specialist, calling on major engineering, industrial and petrochemical companies. He worked closely with engineers and distributors, training, educating and serving as an expert in his field. Mike had an avid love of the outdoors and told many stories of throughout his childhood, traveling and camping in places such as Bastrop State Park and the Grand Tetons. Mike lived on his and Jane’s beloved ranch outside Bastrop, Texas and he could frequently be seen on his tractor tending the cattle, mowing the acres, or simply walking in the fields picking wildflowers for one of Jane’s many most treasured bouquets. Mike’s humor, his warmth and enthusiasm, his generous and loving spirit, his unabashed, open-arms approach to any task given, and ability to never meet a stranger were all evident. He had a true heart for service and approached his volunteer work with passion. He was a CASA, (court-appointed special advocate for abused and neglected children), volunteered with the Feed the Need Ministry, (which provides food and disaster relief to many area communities), and especially loved working with the Sunshine Respite, (a day program for those affected by Alzheimer’s or dementia.) Mike Haley was a master woodworker and could literally fix anything, from household appliances to toys belonging to his grandchildren whom he adored and lovingly called him Bobba.

A deeply spiritual man, Mike was a member for years of BSF, (Bible Study Fellowship) and was a Promise Keeper, a world-wide organization of men promoting the building and strengthening of Godly husbands, fathers and leaders. He was indeed a highly cherished and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Mike is survived by spouse Jane Haley, daughters Ericka Harkins (spouse John Harkins), Molly Humphrey (spouse Charley Humphrey), grandchildren Ella Rose Humphrey, Marty Humphrey and Haley Grace Harkins, Uncle Don Haley, nephews John Haley (Darin), James Haley, Brian Jernigan (Yoanna) and niece Melanie Fleming (Jason). He is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Jack and Nora Haley, his brother John Haley and sister-in law, Sandra Haley.

With respect for current health concerns and uncertainties at this time, the family plans to have Celebration of Life ceremonies for Mike in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to CASA of Bastrop or Sunshine Respite at the First United Methodist Church, Bastrop, TX. The family of Mike Haley wishes to extend sincerest gratitude to Dr. Carlos Ruben deCelis, to the incredible nurses at Cornerstone Hospital, Austin, special angels there, Nina Jackson and Franklin Shatsa, and those friends who were our shepherds on our journey, Carol Newman, Joan Redding, Fred Stovall, Linda Moore, Cheryl Wettlaufer, Sidney Beenken, and nephew Brian Jernigan.
