Maureen Baxter 95, of Smithville Texas, passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 11, 2023. She was born on December 17, 1927 in Colchester, Essex, England. She married J.D. Baxter in England during WW2 and was considered a British War Bride when she moved to the United States. Life in the U.S. began in Camp Wood, Tx. She lived in various places until she settled in Grandfalls, TX where she was a longtime resident. Maureen was a waitress who loved her job in the cafes of Grandfalls and Royalty, Texas. She worked for Grandma Elzey, Lena Sliger, and Charlotte Butler, before owning her own cafe called "The Friendly Cafe" in the 70s. She was well known for her friendliness, love of family, and love for our Veterans. Many called her their friend, but for family she was Mom or Granny. Maureen enjoyed gardening, and would often be seen outside planting, or watering her flowers and plants. She absolutely loved Christmas and her Christmas Village displays were her favorite thing to put out. She also loved to sew quilts and taught her grandchildren how to sew when they were younger. She was known as Granny to her grandkids and all their friends. Her grandkids will always remember being able to call, and her come running with food for a houseful of teenagers. Maureen was welcomed into Heaven by her late husband J.D., her son Danny, grandson Donnie, granddaughter Shelly, great-grandson Ollie and a host of friends who went before her. She is survived by daughter Janice Chew (Buddy) of Smithville Tx, sons Brian Baxter (Mary) of Monahans, Tx. Gary Baxter (Rhonda), Allan Baxter (Audra), and Jerry Baxter all of Smithville Tx. Maureen had 16 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren, who she absolutely loved and adored. Memorial services will be held in Camp Wood, Tx at a later date.
