Mary Clements Maynard McMurrey, 86, of Bastrop, TX passed away on December 6th, 2022. Mary was born in Bastrop, TX to C.B Maynard and Lucy Rivers Maynard on March 3rd, 1936. She attended Mina Elementary in Bastrop and St. Stephen’s Episcopal High School in Austin. In 1957 she graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics. Mary later received from Texas State University a Master of Arts in Texas History in 1976. She also received certifications as a Secondary School Counselor and Secondary School Administrator and Supervisor from the University of Texas at Austin. During her life, she served as a Legislator’s Secretary, High School Teacher and School Counselor, and as an Assistant Principal with high schools in both San Antonio and Austin. Believing in the importance of community service, Mary volunteered as a Candy Striper at St. David’s Hospital in Austin, as a CASA volunteer in San Antonio, and with the Children’s Advocacy Center in Bastrop. She held positions as Secretary of the Bastrop Education Foundation, Vice President and later President of the Bastrop County Historical Society, member of the Bastrop Fine Arts Guild Circle of Friends, and a vestry member of the Calvary Episcopal Church in Bastrop. In retirement, Mary found great joy in managing the family ranch raising Texas longhorn cattle, rescuing Labradors and other animals with vibrant and unique personalities, and watching her horses run and play. Mary is survived by her two children, Mary Allen Smith and William C. McMurrey, her seven grandchildren, William B. McMurrey, Mandy McMurrey, James McMurrey, William Smith, Mary Kevan Smith, Christopher Smith, and Matthew Maynard Smith, and her two great-grandchildren, Sara McMurrey and Lucy McMurrey. Mary is preceded in death by her sister, Lucy Rivers Maynard, and her eldest son, Allen Maynard McMurrey. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on February, 4, 2023 at the First United Methodist Church of Bastrop, 1201 Main St, Bastrop, TX 78602. A reception will follow the service. Memorials may be given to the Bastrop County Historical Society Museum.
