Jose Gregorio Alvarez

Jose Gregorio Alvarez Sr., 89, of Cedar Creek, Tx, passed away on March 14, 2024, in Austin Texas.

He was born May 9, 1934 to Miguel and Ermeregilda Alvarez in Donna, Texas. His careers were diverse and wide ranging. He was a businessman, owning and managing both a restaurant and a club in Lubbock, Tx. He later moved his family to central Texas where he began a long career at White Swan Foods. He topped off the latter part of his career life as a popular and respected Spanish radio broadcaster in the Austin area. His booming voice, sense of humor, and expert knowledge of Spanish music made him an Austin Spanish radio favorite of local Spanish listeners. Though ambushed by a sudden stroke in 2015, he defied the Doctors' predictions of a 2 year survival by overcoming the odds for almost 9 years. To the end, "Jambo" showed strength and a never ending love for his entire family and all who knew him.

Gregorio is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Helen Montez Alvarez, his brothers Miguel and Roberto Alvarez, sons Armando, Gregorio, Javier, Gregorio Jr., Aubin, Michael and Jesse Benavides, daughters Sylvia, Nereida, and Trinidad, extended family Catarino, Rolando, and Brenda, numerous nieces and nephews, many grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by first wife and mother, Julia Escobedo Alvarez, second wife and mother, Juanita Navarro Alvarez, brothers Ignacio, Lionel, Jose, Ricardo, and Guadalupe, sisters Natalia, Maria del Socorro, Santos, and Faustina, and daughter Maria de Lourdes.

A visitation will be Monday, March 25, from 4-8pm at Bastrop Providence Funeral Home with a rosary to begin at 6pm. The Funeral Service will be Tuesday, March 26th, at 11am, also at Providence Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Bastrop, Tx.

The Alvarez family wishes to thank his physician, Dr. Pompeyo Chavez for his years of care and the Austin Hospice Center at Christopher House for their care through his toughest days.
