Gaylan C. Sampson

April 2, 1938 — January 31, 2019

On January 31, 2019 at 08:30, Gaylan C. Sampson went to be with The Lord. Gaylan was a devout Christian who dedicated his life to Jesus Christ.

Gaylan was born on April 2, 1938 to Louella and Herbert Sampson in Dawson, Minnesota. Gaylan grew up in Dawson where he met the love of his life and wife of 62 years, Janet Cummings. Gaylan and Janet were married on October 1, 1955. Gaylan and Janet had three children, Sandy, Jerry, and Scott.

Gaylan joined the United States Air Force on March 23, 1956. Gaylan dutifully served his country for 40 years with the Air Force, Air National Guard, and as a Civil Servant until his retirement in 1995 with the rank of Master Sergeant. Gaylan continued his love and devotion to his country and the military serving as the Sgt. of Arms at the Smithville, TX VFW Post 1309.

Gaylan loved his horses like they were his kids. He always made sure that they ate before he did and that they were beyond spoiled with horse cookies. Gaylan had many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom he loved with every inch of his soul. Whether it was watching them ride bulls, JROTC balls, spoiling his great-granddaughters, or sneaking them to Texas Burger because “a boy’s gotta eat,” his heart was full and proud.

The world lost a good man, husband, father, grandpa, great-grandpa, and world class car dancer. We will miss you, Gramps!

Gaylan is preceded in death by his mother and father, Louella and Herbert Sampson; sister, Lynette Matthews; son, Scott Sampson; and horse, Dunnie Matthew.

Gaylan is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Janet Sampson; son, Jerry and wife Aurelia Sampson; daughter, Sandy and husband Jerome Scallions; grandsons, Chris and wife Ashley Linder, Jason and wife Desiree Linder, Cody and wife Brandi Scallions, Colby Scallions, and Justin Allen; granddaughters Lauren and husband Michael Goodman, Kirsten and husband John Barton, and Kaylee Sampson and loving boyfriend Kendal Fiebrich; great-grandchildren Dakota, Brooke, Jasee, Kynleigh, Kirbi, Brylee, Ashton, Carson, Kameryn, Blayne, Clayton, Tom, and Lilly.
