Command Sergeant Major (USA Ret) Douglas Blanchard Hayes, 92, passed away on March 4, 2021, in Bastrop, Texas.
Doug was born in Crowley, LA, to Lucille and George Hayes. He attended school at Crowley and moved to Lake Charles, LA. On November 17, 1955, he married his sweetheart, Doris Ann Thornton.
He served in the United States Army for 30 years -- the last 5 years serving as the Command Sergeant Major of the 1st Calvary Division at Fort Hood, Texas. He served 2 tours during the Vietnam Campaign. He was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal with One Silver and One Bronze Star; Bronze Star Medal with Three Oak Leaf Clusters; Purple Heart; Army Commendation Medal with Three Oak Leaf Clusters; Army Service Medal; Combat Infantryman Badge; Good Conduct Medal with Four Loops; Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster; National Defense Service Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster; Overseas Service Ribbon (Number 4); Expert Rifle Badge; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm and Legion of Merit; Air Medal; Army Forces Expeditionary; Valorous Unit Citation; and Army Meritorious Unit Award
He enjoyed traveling, gardening and camping and loved spending time with his family.
Doug is preceded in death by his parents Lucille and George Hayes and his daughter Monica Hayes-Selman. He is survived by his wife, Doris Ann, son Danny Hayes (Barbara), daughters Jacque Tate (Ron), Michele Nelson (John), brother George Hayes (Patsy), granddaughters Brandi Schaub (Cory) and Michelle Durieux (Ben Harrison) and grandsons Jerry Hayes (Kelli) and Neilan Nelson, great-granddaughters Bailey, Morgan, Jordan and Peyten Schaub and great-grandsons Chandler Hayes, Dillon Hayes and Dylan Harrison.
Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Saturday, March 13, 2021, at Bastrop Providence Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held for the immediate family at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at a later date due to COVID limitations.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests all memorials may be given to Garysinisefoundation.org which services veterans in need. The family of Doug wishes to extend their sincere thanks to Dr. Thomas Westwick of Baylor Scott and White, Encompass nurses and staff and all the doctors and staff at Audie Murphy Veteran’s Hospital in San Antonio who took such wonderful care of Doug.
