Doris Ann Hayes

October 31, 1934 — July 17, 2023

Doris Ann (Thornton) Hayes, age 88, of Henderson, Texas passed away on July 17, 2023 in Bastrop, TX. Doris was born in Grapeland, Texas to Ezell and Mattie Mae Thornton on October 31, 1934. She attended Henderson High School where she graduated in 1952. After graduation, she moved to Dallas, Texas and started her career as a clerk in the filming industry. She met the Love of Her Life, Douglas Blanchard Hayes, who worked for the US Army at Fort Hood, Texas. They were married on November 17, 1955, in Lake Charles, LA and later were stationed in Alaska, Panama - Central America, Killeen and retiring in San Antonio. In 1963, she began her civilian service career for Department of Defense, US Army as a GS-5, Secretary. She retired in 1994, after 31 years of dedicated and superior Service as a GS-9, Division Secretary for the Communications Command, Department of Defense, US Army at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. She was a military wife who not only was the rock of the Hayes family but also a great support of her husband as the “First Lady” for Command Sergeant Major, Douglas B. Hayes, of the First Calvary Division at Fort Hood. Her joys in life were to love, raise and support her children, spend time with her grand and great-grand children and travel the Country. She was a selfless mother and wife who always put her family first and made great sacrifices for their happiness. She and Doug traveled to all 50 states after her retirement. Her most loved place of travel was Santa Fe, New Mexico, where you would find her annually attending pow-wow and enjoying the native culture of the people she supported and loved. Her Christian faith was strong as she proclaimed her faith to all non-believers to win them over to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This was her hope for all family members. She is survived by her daughters Jacque Tate (Ron) and Michele Nelson (John); son Danny Hayes (Barbara); granddaughters Brandi Schaub (Cory) and Michelle Durieux; and grandsons Jerry Hayes (Kelli) and Neilan Nelson; great-granddaughters Bailey, Morgan, Jordan and Peyten Schaub; and great-grandsons Chandler Hayes, Dillon Hayes and Dylan Harrison.
