Cortney Nichole DeAngelo (nee Buechler) of Austin, died peacefully in her sleep at her home on February 18, 2024. Cortney was born in Austin, Texas to Scott Buechler and Dee Heap on February 24th,1979. She spent her childhood in Pflugerville, Texas and graduated from Pflugerville High School. Cortney married Jonathan DeAngelo on October 23, 2010, in Pflugerville. They had 15 wonderful years together in total.
In her professional journey, Cortney devoted herself to her passion for theater, earning recognition as a revered 'tech ninja' within Austin's improv community. Renowned for her impeccable comedic timing in lighting design and unwavering attention to detail, she leaves behind a legacy of artistic excellence and treasured memories. Cortney took immense pride in her collaboration with Edwin Wise, notably their creation of the Fantastical Fairytale Artifacts show in 2015, which continues to captivate audiences today. Additionally, Cortney played a significant role at Austin Community College, leveraging her storytelling prowess to support the innovative pilot program, Storytelling with Data.

Cortney and Jonathan had recently embarked on a new chapter in their lives, purchasing their first home in Bastrop, Texas. They were eagerly looking forward to establishing roots and creating a cozy nest in their new abode, lovingly nicknamed “The Grotto.” Their decision to settle in Bastrop was driven by a longing to be closer to their cherished niece and nephews, fostering stronger bonds and relishing in precious moments together. She took her role as Aunt Nene very seriously with all of her nieces and nephews. Cortney's passion for theater and storytelling was complemented by her love for Austin's vibrant culture, and she took great joy in sharing these experiences with her nieces and nephews, nurturing their appreciation for the arts and the world around them. Cortney lived her life outside the restraints of conformity and pursued her dreams passionately with her unique blend of strength and vulnerability.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Jonathan DeAngelo, her mother, Dee Heap, and step-father, David Heap, as well as her step-mother, Linda Brinkmeyer. Cortney is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Bradley and Nikki Buechler along with her niece and nephews, Tyler, Abel, and Deacon Buechler. Additionally, she leaves behind her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Sean and Becca Waters, and their daughters, Penny and Niko Waters. Cortney is also mourned by her in-laws, John and Sharon DeAngelo & Maureen and Larry Davis. Her Aunt Edwina, Uncle Andrew, along with all of her family in Odessa join in grieving her loss. Lastly, Cortney's dear friend, Edwin Wise, fondly remembers her.
Cortney is preceded in death by her beloved father, Scott Buechler, as well as her grandparents John and Kaye Buechler & Katherine and Edward Sparks. She is also preceded by her cherished Aunt and Uncle, Katherine and Tom Stanley; her cousins Cole Stanley and Basil Sparks.
Cortney’s Celebration of Life services and Memorial will be held at 1 pm on March 9th at Osprey Hall, at South Shore Lake Bastrop Park. No entrance fees to the park will be required.
