After attending the University of Texas on a Voice Scholarship, Charles went to New York where he landed the role of Sir Sagramore in Broadway’s “Camelot” -- on his first audition. When the show closed in New York it became the “National Touring Company” and Charles was promoted to the co-starring role of Sir Lancelot playing opposite Katherine Grayson as Guinevere.
Following a year of touring with “Camelot” performing in 20 major cities in the United States and Canada, Charles returned to New York where he was chosen by Direct Gower Champion for the role of Ambrose Kemper in the National and International Company of “Hello Dolly” starring Mary Martin. Following a lengthy tour of U.S. cities, the show, by special request of President Linden Johnson, was sent to Vietnam to entertain the troops – thereby acquiring the distinction of being the only production to entertain in a combat zone.
When he returned home from Vietnam, Charles went immediately to the Las Vegas Riviera Hotel where he reprised his role of Ambrose Kemper in their production of “Hello Dolly.” His leading lady in this production was Betty Grable who was cast in the role of Dolly.
Once the run of the Las Vegas “Hello Dolly” ended, Charles moved on to Los Angeles where he was chosen by Producer Edwin Lester to appear in his Los Angeles Civic Light Opera production of the “Student Prince.”
While living in Los Angeles, Charles performed on CBS Television’s Art Linkletter Show as a regular concert guest performer for Columbia Artists Management.
When not doing stage work or concert tours, Charles kept busy performing, as Guest Entertainer, aboard the cruise ships of the Royal Viking Cruise Line and the Princess Cruise Line. Charles performed on 127 cruises to all parts of the world.
In lieu of floral contributions, the family asks that donations be made to the charity of their choice.
