Carol Jean Carver Newman, 75, of Bastrop, TX passed away on August 10, 2021 in Bastrop, TX.

“CJ” was born in Huntington, WV to Wallace Carver and Omer McKinney Carver on June 9, 1946.  She was a straight A student at Vinson High School in Huntington; one of her fondest memories was being awarded a “Week in Washington., D.C.” trip during which she got to meet Jackie Kennedy.

“CJ” devoted her life to Christ while serving as a Director of Christian Education at various churches in West Virginia, Indiana, Kentucky and Texas.  She lived a life of service, taught bible school, and was active in feeding the hungry, fighting human trafficking and spreading the gospel. Carol Jean was passionate about music and sang in the church choir and participated yearly in A Joyous Christmas concert in Bastrop, composed by Joseph Martin and directed by Brad Nix. She served as a long-time member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, an international civic, social and cultural organization. Most importantly, she loved her family and friends tirelessly and fully, for which she will always be remembered and cherished.

Carol Jean was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 29 years, Rev. Steven L. Newman and her precious parents, Wallace and Omer Carver.

Carol Jean is survived by four children, Matthew Chambers, Kathleen Kessell Chambers, Mary Elizabeth Pellegrino, and Jeremy Newman; a very special daughter-in-law Dr. Mary Bryan Hobbs;  a very special son-in-law Glenn Pellegrino; a very special daughter-in-law Sherri Newman;  two treasured cousins Annie Mae Burcher and Charlene Thompson, two dear sisters-in-law, Lynn Newman Barcus and Jan Lea Newman O’Donnell; two loved brothers-in-law, Butch Barcus and Kelly O’Donnell; five cherished nieces and nephews, Trey Barcus, Jill Barcus Hall, Todd Barcus, Leanne Grace, and Linnea Joy O’Donnell; eight adored grandchildren, Kai Leigh Chambers- Hascher, Carter, Brooks and Hobbs Chambers,  Ava and Ela Pellegrino, and Trina and Brooke Newman; and her fiesty “Bastrop Tribe” who remained at her side through all the joy, laughter and tears, especially in her remaining weeks.

Visitation will be 3P-6P, Fri., August 27, 2021, at Bastrop Providence Funeral Home. A joint celebration of life for Carol Jean and Steve will be held at 11A, Sat., August 28, 2021 at Bastrop Christian Church.
