Katie Browning

July 26, 1913 — May 22, 2010

Katie Dee Kauffman Browning departed us and went to be in the presence of our Lord on Saturday morning, May 22, 2010. She was born July 26, 1913 to Bessie Viola Roberts Kauffman and David Foman Kauffman in Liberty Hill, Texas. She enjoyed a wonderful childhood with many relatives nearby. Growing up on a farm and ranch, she had many colorful stories to tell. From driving her siblings to school in a buggy and then a Model T, to driving her sister Hester around Bastrop in a modern day automobile, she created many stories that our family has shared and will cherish for years to come. The family moved to Bastrop in 1929. She married Robert Sydney Browning in 1938. In 1941, their only daughter, Anita Kay, was born. Katie spent most of her life taking care of her family. Cooking, housekeeping and devoted love of family are only a few of the traits she passed along. She was active in Kay’s school as a room mother and volunteer and was loved by all the children. She will long be remembered by many as the Librarian in Bastrop during the 1960s and 1970s. Katie was a member of First Baptist Church Bastrop since 1941, with a short stent of church membership in Corpus Christi while the family lived there from 1954-1961. She and her husband taught Training Union for teens while attending church in Corpus Christi, TX. When she returned to Bastrop, Katie was an active member of First Baptist Church, Bastrop until her health prevented her from attending. When asked what she attributed her longevity and good life to, she never hesitated to answer, “My Lord and my Bible.” We are blessed that she passed her faith along to her family. Her sharp wit and mind carried through until the end of her life. We will miss her infectious laughter and straightforward talk. She remained the family matriarch for years. Surviving her are: her daughter, Anita Kay Linenberger, granddaughter Aya Linenberger-Lueders and husband, Russell; great-grandchildren Dara Kay Hofferek and husband, Trace and Dustin James Matocha; her most precious great-great grandson, Deven Reese Bratcher; her sister Rachel Owens; and numerous nieces and nephews, and step great-great grandchild Luke Hofferek. Preceding her in death were her parents, her sister Hester Fay Lock and her brother Bud Kauffman. The family will receive guests at Bastrop Providence Funeral Home in Bastrop from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening. Funeral Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at First Baptist Church of Bastrop with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery, Bastrop. The family wishes to thank the staff of Bastrop Lost Pines Nursing Center, Dr. Rob Dougherty and staff, and her devoted care taker, Mary Castillo. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 1201 Water Street, Bastrop, Texas.
