Laura Mae Turner Zglinski was born in Cedar Creek, Texas on October 28, 1928. She left her home, cattle, and dogs on October 1, 2016 to join her parents, Remey and Viola Turner, and brother Jack in Heaven. Many of us knew her as Ms. Laura, Laura Mae or Mamaw. Laura Mae was an avid outdoorswoman. She grew up working alongside her parents on their farm, growing vegetables, raising cattle and barrel racing. She was an amazing cook and equally as amazing baker. Her family remembers fondly her key lime and coconut cream pies.
Laura Mae is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Pollard and husband Ken of Coolidge, Texas and her son Mike Zglinski and wife Gena of Houston, Texas. Laura will be missed by her four grandchildren: Missy Griesenbeck Schuelke (Troy Schuelke) of Smithville, Christin Pollard Siller of Bastrop (Henry Siller), Matthew Pollard of Dallas, and Amy Pollard Shockey (Tim Shockey) of Austin. Laura was blessed with six great-grandchildren: Shelly, Clayton and Coleman Schuelke of Smithville, Sara and Ryan Siller of Bastrop and Tayler Pollard of Dallas.
Laura was a proud graduate of Bastrop High School, Class of 1946. She served as one of three Great-Grand Marshalls in the 69th Annual Bastrop Homecoming Parade. Laura attended business school in Austin when she graduated from high school. She then went to work in the PX and became the manager of the Officer’s Club at Austin Bergstrom Air Force Base. Laura left the base to work as a tax assessor and collector for the Del Valle Independent School District. She retired in 1986 after her mother passed away, to manage the home, farm and take care of her father Remey.
Laura was an active member of the Cedar Creek United Methodist Church. She served as the church’s historian, volunteered as the church’s greeter and most recently she made sure that everyone that stepped through the front doors had a name tag and a glass of orange juice. Laura was also the treasurer for the Cedar Creek Cemetery Association. She worked diligently to ensure that those who called the Cedar Creek Cemetery their final resting place were looked after.
A celebration of life service for Laura Mae Turner Zglinski will be held on October 5, 2016 at 2:00 PM at the Cedar Creek United Methodist Church, followed by a graveside service and reception.
