Fred William Powers Jr.

Fred Powers, Jr. 94, passed away Sept. 24, was laid to rest beside his beloved parents Fred Sr. & Charlotte Powers in Oglesby, OK where he was born and grew up. After graduating from High School, he joined the Nat'l Youth Adm. in Tokawa, OK doing construction at the same time studying to become a Radio Engineer from a book he ordered from Chicago Allied Radio. After 4 mos., hitched hike to Dallas to take the exam, passed it. First job @ Elk City, OK @ $15/wk., Europe War started, moved to Ardmore, OK, @ KVBO for $17.50/wk. Then Brownwood offered him$25/wk. as Chief Engineer for 6 mos. then World War ll started. He joined the Navy as part of the signal corp., was assigned to the British Carrier HMS Indomitable of the Royal Navy. He witnessed 1st hand kamikaze attacks. After the war, went home to Borger, Tx where his parents lived at that time and pursued his own passion - was well know Builder/Developer in Borger in the 60's. He moved his family to Austin in the 70's, continued building developing, real estate sales. Was the Salesman of the Year for Bill Milburn in 1977 then moved to then Connan Homes and top producer for a number of years. He was an avid aviator, loved flying , acquired his Private Pilot License and eventually achieve multi-engine and instrument ratings. He had a keen mind and maintained his good sense of humor to the very end. He was an accomplished, self-made man. He is survived by his wife Maria Powers, sons Denny & Bill Powers, daughter Debby Powers. He also left behind grand children, great grand children and many dear friends. Memorial is planned @ a later date.
