Charles Bert Carlisle
Born: October 11, 1937
Passed: November 20, 2015
Bert was born to Chester Lee Carlisle and Eva Jo Minatrea in a small West Texas town called Dozier. The family moved to Lubbock in 1952 where they ran a Tourist Court consisting of a motel, an old-time automotive service station and a country store. He would fill your car, check the oil, repair a tire and grab your hamburger meat all within a few minutes without ever considering washing his hands!
In 1955, Bert followed in his older brothers footsteps by joining the Navy at the age of 18 “to see the world”. Turns out he never left the States, serving in Tulsa, OK; Jacksonville, FL; Corpus Christi, TX and Oak Harbor, WA. He met and married the mother of his children, Dora, in Corpus Christi. They moved to Washington shortly after the wedding and within a year Debra was born. After serving in the Navy, he went to work at AT&T in Dallas where Karen, Pam and Brian were born. In the late 70’s he transferred into Austin as a telephone operator with Southwestern Bell until he could hold a position as a telephone repairman. In Austin, he met and married his second wife, Bennie, who he enjoyed traveling with. He retired in 1997 with 35 years of service with AT&T. Bert enjoyed his retirement years by gardening, playing poker, giving sage investment advice, trying wine and cigars from across the world, helping Gary harvest hay, and watching birds from his back porch. Bert was a deep thinker, often playing the devil’s advocate to stir up deeper conversation. He will be deeply missed.
