Thomas Neil Mcculley

June 30, 1946 — July 21, 2015

Tom was born on June 30, 1946, to Sarah Jane Perkins and Neil Winfred McCulley in Houston, Texas. He passed away suddenly on July 21, 2015, in Bastrop, Texas. He joined the Army when he was 22 and attended Officers Candidate School, earning the rank of captain. He served a year in Vietnam in 1969-1970. After his military service, his working life always centered around computers, and at his retirement he was the vice president of Information Technology at a medium size corporation in Houston. His love for computers extended into his retirement, and he greatly enjoyed the games he played with people from literally all over the world. Tom also played competitive bridge and earned the distinction of being a Life Master. He continued to play with some bridge groups in Bastrop and was always willing to give a lesson on a difficult hand. The first organization he joined when he moved to Bastrop in 2008 was the Bastrop Area Cruisers; he proudly drove his beloved Corvette to the meetings and participated in the annual car show as a judge. In 2009, he was elected to serve on the Architectural Control Committee of the Pine Forest Property Owners Association, a position he held until his death. In that capacity, he was instrumental in helping to rebuild Pine Forest after the 2011 fire. Anyone who talked to Tom at any length of time realized that he was intelligent and well read and relished an argument for argument’s sake. Hobbies included photography, reading, short story writing, and doing the day-to-day feeding of the birds that came to the yard and the family cats. Tom is survived by his wife of twenty-five years, Sue Lane; his mother, Jane Pardo; his sister, Gina Minzenmeyer of La Grange and her husband Glen; one half brother, Skip in South Carolina; twin half-sisters, Karen and Lynn in Florida; his nephew Bryan Minzenmeyer and his wife Courtney in Houston ; and his nieces Maria Minzenmeyer and Mandi Minzenmeyer, both in Austin. A visitation will be held Friday July 24, 2015 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Bastrop Providence Funeral Home. A memorial service will be Saturday July 25, 2015 at noon at First United Methodist Church of Bastrop. Memorials may be made to the Austin Humane Society, the First United Methodist Church of Bastrop, or a charity of your choice.
