John Corby Weiss

February 24, 1932 — November 8, 2014

John (Chink) Corby Weiss On the evening of November 8, 2014, John passed away at St. David’s, South Austin Hospital. He fought a three-year battle with lung cancer. John was 83 years old. John was comforted by his wife Elaine Weiss and surrounded by family. John was born on February 24, 1932 in Belton, Texas to Gus Otto Weiss and Margaret Jane Burnham. He is survived by Elaine Marie Kreitz Weiss, wife of 59 years, Dale Weiss and Mel Portis, Corby Weiss and Pat, daughter Patricia Harding and Quinn Izard, Earle Weiss and April, Matthew Weiss and Diana. Dad grew up with the nickname “Chink”. He got the name because his Aunt was reading a novel that included a Chinese cook. At the time, John was playing with his mom’s pots and pans, and called him “Chink”. The name stuck for the majority of his childhood and his oldest friends still refer to him as such. Mom met Dad while walking home from school with her girlfriend Nell Hibbs (Crosby). Nell said she wanted to introduce Mom to someone, “If you believe every 10th word he said, you are believing too much.” Dad jumped out of a cab and said, “It must be a holiday in heaven because they let two angels come down to earth.” Later Dad went dancing at Eddie’s Place and Mom was there with friends and invited him to sit with them. Dad asked if he could take her home but she said “No, but I’m not doing anything next Saturday”. They were together ever since. John served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Hornet (CVA-12) with a rank of AD3-Q March 1951 to March 1955 as an aircraft mechanic during China Service, Navy Occupation Conflict (Korean War). His favorite story is being flown inland to repair an aircraft down that needed a new carburetor, he recalled hearing a bird calling and thinking that the enemy scouts were about. He hurriedly completed the repair, and they flew the plane out. His chief jokingly reprimanded him for not utilizing the safety wires. He realized later in life that the bird he heard was the birdcall of Peacock and not the enemy. Special thanks to the doctors and nurses at MD Anderson Cancer Center, especially Drs. Bonnie Glisson, Renata Ferrarotto, and Kathleen Nader, whom we are forever indebted to and to the staff of St. David’s South Austin Hospital who extended the most excellent of comfort care prior to his passing.
