Vina Marie Eskew was born on September 20, 1937 in Lufkin, Texas and passed away in Bastrop, Texas on November 2, 2014. She was born to D. Benton Sims and Merle Lee Sims and spent her early life in numerous towns while her father was district manager for Humble Oil Company and later Chevrolet Motor Company. She eventually graduated from Taylor High School in 1955. A year later, her father bought Albright Chevrolet in Bastrop and renamed it Sims Chevrolet and Oldsmobile. After moving to Bastrop, she met her future husband, Charles A. Eskew, a sportswriter for the Austin American Statesman. They married and had two children, Charles Allen Eskew, Jr. and Mercer Benton Eskew. Vina spent the rest of her life in Bastrop. She was always a working mom. She worked for the old Citizens State Bank, Sims Chevrolet and Oldsmobile, Victoria Bank, Norwest and Wells Fargo. She spent a lot of time involved with the wonderful Masons and Shriners. Her husband was a dedicated member of these organizations, and their closest friends were from these groups. She enjoyed playing bridge and going to Calvary Baptist Church in Bastrop. She was very close to those with whom she played bridge and from her church. Vina was also an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was very proud of her ancestors who fought for American freedom. She was a dedicated mother, grandmother, daughter and niece, who spent a great deal of her life caring for the needs of others. Vina was always known for her kindness and sweetness. It is these traits that her family and friends will always remember. She is survived by her sons, Charles Allen Eskew and Mercer Benton and Shelby Eskew and her grandchildren, Brandee, Jordan, Charles Allen III, Reagan, Jessica and Joshua. Visitation will be 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 5, 2014. Celebration of Life Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 6, 2014 at Bastrop Providence Chapel. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
