Norris B. McCord, born March 16, 1927 in Lee County, Texas, died Wednesday April 23, 2014 in Bastrop, Texas. Visitation will be 1:00pm and Funeral services are at 2:00pm Friday, April 25, 2014, at Bastrop Providence Funeral Home, with Pastor Carmen Retzlaff presiding. Interment will be at Lawhon Springs Cemetery, Elgin, Texas.
McCord was the son of William Harvey McCord and Beulah Lee Allen McCord. He was a descendent of William and Nancy Lee Carr, part of Stephen F. Austin’s “Old 300.” McCord cherished his childhood memories in Lawhon Springs and Beaukiss, near Elgin, Texas.
After graduating from Elgin High School in 1944 he served in the US Navy in WWII until his honorable discharge. In February 1951 he joined the Austin Police Department and on September 7, 1952 he married Helen Mueller in Yoakum, Texas. Austin was home until 1970 when they moved to Bastrop. McCord retired as a Lieutenant from the Austin Police Department after 30 years of service. He wrote, “My happiest time was spent solving crimes, capturing the criminal and recovering property.”
McCord was talented in drawing, woodworking, and crossword puzzles. Friends and family will especially remember his love of humor, storytelling, and historical family research. He was preceded in death by his sister B McCord Young; and brothers, Ernest Norman McCord and Warren Harold McCord. He is survived by his wife, Helen, of Bastrop, Texas; sons Greg McCord of Dripping Springs, Texas, and Clayton McCord of Canton, Texas; daughter Terry Carter of Bastrop; grandchildren, Caleb McCord, Alexis Barron, Luke Barron, Erin McCord, and Josh McCord; sister Bobby Greenhaw of Austin; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
