Tracy Chalmers, age 91, a lifelong resident of Bastrop was called from this life on January 22, 2014. He was born January 3, 1923 to Owen West Chalmers and Ludie Rector Chalmers.
He was a veteran of WWII having served in the US Army. Tracy was also a long-time volunteer firefighter in Bastrop.
His store at the corner of Cedar and Main, Tracy’s Drive N, has been a gathering place for neighborhood customers for some 60 years. Tracy and his wife, Mary Jean worked there together until her death in 2011. Many a yarn has been spun within its walls. Those walls are decorated with pictures of neighborhood friends and family. Hanging from the ceiling are many Bastrop High School “spirit ribbons” collected over many years. Tracy was an avid Bastrop Bear fan and many students bought their goodies there at lunch time.
Tracy was an avid golfer and was a member of the group of golfers affectionately known as “The Town Bunch”. They were a group of a dozen or more friends who regularly played the course in Bastrop State Park. They were some of the primary support that saw the course increased from 9 to 18 holes.
Tracy was a kind and gentle man who helped many a person over hard times by selling groceries on the tab long after all others had ceased this practice.
He is survived by: his son, Forrest Chalmers (Karen) and daughter, Sarah Chalmers; grandchildren, Tracy III, Kallie, and Marlayna; and his special caregivers, Shirley and Heidi.
