Jewell Alexander Smith, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, was called from this life on Tuesday, May 8, 2012. Jewell was born on July 28, 1922, in Waelder, Texas to Andrew Alexander and Polly Martin Alexander. She passed away at age 89 in Bastrop, Texas, where Jewell and Thurba operated Smith’s Service Station for years. Many in the community have known and loved Jewell and Thurba for their generosity and willingness to help others. Jewell, or “Ma” as she was lovingly known to her 5 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, is survived by her son Richard Smith of Bastrop; son Doug Smith of Austin; grandchildren Tammy Smith Callaway and her husband Charlie, Mart Smith, Angie Smith Reid, Kevin Smith and his wife Renee, Nathan Smith and his wife Jennifer; great-grandchildren Megan Smith, Hanna Jo Smith, Camryn Callaway, Shelby Callaway, Derrick Smith, Seann Mulligan, Brodie Mulligan, Kelsey Smith, Colton Smith, Kendall Smith, Aliyah Smith and Hanna Grace Smith. Jewell was preceded in death by Thurba Smith, her husband of 65 years, and her daughter-in-law Rachel Smith. The family would like to express gratitude to the following for the care provided to Jewell: Seton Hospital, Bluebonnet Health Care, Bastrop Nursing Center and Asera Care Hospice. The family would also like to recognize and thank Tina Burditt for the loving care and assistance she provided to both Jewel and her family. Visitation will be held 5:00-7:00pm Sunday, May 13, 2012 at Bastrop Providence Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00am on Monday, May 14, 2012 at First Baptist Church Bastrop, Texas. Burial will be at Oakhill Cemetery near McDade. Pallbearers will be Mart Smith, Terry Witherspoon, Charlie Callaway, Nathan Smith, Kevin Smith and Jack Burney. Honorary pallbearers are David Lock, Bobby Jenkins and Reid Sharp.
